CUT! Awkwardness Radiates From LA’s Top Two

There’s hubbub over LA City Council President Eric Garcetti’s appearance tonight as Mayor of Los Angeles on TNT’s The Closer. Judging by the LAist article, Garcetti got the job because his dad, former City Attorney Gil Garcetti, is now a consulting producer. (A good reminder that nepotism runs through every career path.)

But don’t forget current Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa! He and Garcetti were both on All My Children this February. Here’s Tony.

Below, you’ll find that Garcetti’s lines are actually rather apt. When lauding the factory owner for going green, Garcetti replies that “It’s about family.” The factory owner replies: “Well, you don’t have to sell me on the importance of family.”

What with Little Garcetti slotted in on Papa Garcetti’s show, it’s clear all are aware of that fact.

A kind recommendation: Eric, pick up some acting books. Uta Hagen has a lot to say about exiting the stage. A robotic insistence to “Snag that coat! Shake that hand! Walk through that door!” is terribly, terribly awkward.

Who Wore It Best?

Just stumbled upon an interesting picture at Barbara Boxer’s Facebook page. It got me thinking… who wore it best?

Hillary Looked Great!

The Chelsea Wedding was this past weekend! Here’s a Hillary photo:

And here’s the invite you’ve already seen, Twitterbugs:

Understated yet elegant. Yet 1995.

Another extremely important Twitter trend today has surrounded the marriage of Lisa Simpson, which some bright spark noted happened on the 1st August 2010 (I know that’s yesterday, but Twitter users can be slow!). Bear with me on this, I actually had to do some research … there was an episode of The Simpsons in 1995 entitled Lisa’s Wedding (Series 6 episode 19). In said episode, there is a flash forward 15 years to Lisa’s wedding, and this is what the invitation read … (see picture on left) …

Gathering my thoughts on the Villaraigosa grades, and planning an interview with a leading Councilmember.

Bernard Parks Likes Snacks, Just Like You and Me

On the heels of Councilmember Bernard Parks’ (CD-8) new obsession with Twitter (@BernardCParks‘ most recent Tweet: “QUESTION!!! What do you think about www.bernardparks.com? What do you think could make my webpage more sufficient? please send suggestions.”), I wanted to share a photo I took at the City Council meeting on June 30th.

I personally find it endearing that someone who chose not to take a pay cut as the city lays off hundreds of workers and cuts city services still prefers snacks from a vending machine. We had those back at school!

Councilmember Parks told LAist:

I never speak about my personal salary. It’s a public record and that’s all I can say to you.

All I can say is, here’s the picture. Is that a koala bear on the microphone? Cute!

Hey, could you throw me a yogurt chip? No yogurt chips? Oh, okay, sunflower seeds are okay too.

It’s a Sunshine (Mark Coogan) Day

It’s Mark Coogan Day! Or was, yesterday. I’m working on a longer post about Lopez Canyon, but in the interim, take heart that June 30, 2010, was MARK COOGAN DAY in the City of Los Angeles.

Kagan hearings over, Coogan praising begins!

The newscaster’s official resolution (.pdf here) is pretty standard, but I did enjoy learning that Mr. Coogan “served a short but significant stint as Southern Africa bureau chief of ABC News in Johannesburg, South Africa during that country’s turbulent struggle to negotiate the most basic of human rights with its system of apartheid.”

Congrats, Coogs!
